Maintaining Innocence

The little girl poked the dark, blue spot on her mother’s arm and asked,

“Mommy, why do you have these spots?”

Trying not to flinch, the mother said,

“It’s a bruise honey. I had an accident.”

The little girl bent her head and kissed the mark.

“Now it will be all better. Just like you do for me.”

The mother’s eyes became watery so she hugged her little girl.

Later that night, the little girl was in bed when the music started playing loud. She put the pillow over her head, but could still hear it. Her mommy had told her to never leave the bedroom at night, but she couldn’t sleep. The little girl turned the light on and drew a picture in her notebook. She loved drawing rainbows and butterflies with all sorts of colors.

A while later the music stopped and the house was quiet. She put her notebook away and climbed back in bed. Before she could turn off the light, her mommy opened the door.

“What are you doing awake?”

“The music was loud. I couldn’t sleep.”

Her mommy came into the room walking funny.

“Are you ok mommy?”

“I’m ok sweetheart. I just had another accident.”

The little girl’s mommy tucked her in and leaned over to kiss her good night.

“Mommy, what are those dark things on your neck?”

Mommy pulled the top of the shirt up to cover the marks.

“It’s nothing to worry about.”

“You should be more careful. You keep having accidents.”

Her mommy made a funny noise and stared at her.

“You’re right. I do have to be more careful.”

An hour later, the door to the little girl’s room opened again. Her mother was wearing a coat, hat and gloves. She packed clothes, a few toys, the notebook and some crayons into a garbage bag and left the room. She came back a few minutes later and gently shook her daughter awake

“What is it mommy?” The girl was very tired.

“We’re going to go on a trip to see your grammy.”

“Right now?” The girl was tired and excited at the same time.

“Yes, we’re going on an adventure.”

“Is daddy coming?”

“No darling. Daddy won’t be coming. He has to go to work.”

“Oh, ok.”

“Let’s get your coat on and be really quiet. We don’t want to wake daddy up.”

The little girl got dressed and mommy took her out to the car. It was really cold, but mommy put blankets over her car seat and they left.

It would be fun to see grammy.
